The Ohrid Macedonian Folk Ensemble was founded in April 2012 by undergraduate and PhD students of the Macedonian Lectoracy at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (ELTE) and the Ethnography Department of University of Debrecen (UNIDEB). The aim of the ensemble is to promote the rich folkloric heritage of Macedonia and to increase cultural exchange between Macedonia and Hungary. The Ohrid Macedonian Folk Ensemble is the first group in Hungary to perform exclusively Macedonian songs and dances. The name of the ensemble is taken from Macedonia’s picturesque Ohrid Lake, which was one of the most important centres for the Slavonic Script, connected to the activity of Saint Clement and Saint Naum.
The region of Ohrid also has strong connections to Hungary. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, tradesmen of mixed nationality arrived from the region and settled down in such Hungarian cities as Miskolc, Gyöngyös, Eger, bringing with them their traditions, among these the cult of Saint Naum of Ohrid.
e Ohrid Macedonian Folk Ensemble has good relationships with many departments and institutes of Saints Cyril and Methodius University, the Tanec Ensemble of Traditional Folk Dances and Songs, the Embassy of the Republic of Macedonia in Budapest, the Association of Aegean Macedonians in Hungary, the Telecottage Organisation of Hungarians in Macedonia, the Department of Ethnography and Cultural Antropolgy at the University of Debrecen, the Vujicsics Ensemble, and other institutions and ensembles.
